Spencer Lodge Elton John

About Spencer Lodge Elton John . Andrew Spencer Lodge, Durban plays 24 hr Elton John Music Marathon
Durban, South Africa: Andrew Spencer Lodge and his Church team held a 24-hour music marathon event last week which was held at the adjacent playing fields to Elders Church in Durban to help raise funds for the Elders Church Roof repair. The event was a huge success with over 600 people turning out to enjoy the event during the day and nearly a thousand people there for the evening concert and party.

It all started at 10am to the sounds of Circle of Life from Elton John backed up by the Church choir and the local town mayor who welcomed everyone to the event. The music theme continued throughout the day contributing to a fun and happy atmosphere. With over 20 stalls including face painting, hoopla, crazy golf and homemade food, everyone quickly got into the swing.
The local farmer’s club stand was one of the most popular attractions with two brand new Massey Fergusson MF-7600 tractors on show. Families, children and grand parents thoroughly enjoyed being driven around the event behind the tractors in comfortable bus-like carriages at the rear with many queuing up for a second and even third ride around the park. Gary Steyn said “It was great to see so many people at the event but we were so busy, it was nearly 4 hours before I could sit down for a coffee.
There was one mishap however when one of the tractors strayed off track slightly and sprayed some loose chippings over one of the organizer cars causing some slight damage.
Local dance club Zodiac performed several dance routines throughout the day and their final number attracted the biggest cheer of the afternoon when getting all the Dads up to join in.
As 7pm approached and the stalls packed up, Jean de Villiers and Mary Van Zyl finalised the counting of the money raised in the day. To our amazement we had already surpassed what we anticipated raising for the whole event. Incredibly, we had collected over 150,000ZAR.
The main evening show kicked off at 8pm and it seems that everyone was there from the community. Live bands performed throughout the evening singing their own versions of Elton John classics. Rita’s performance of “Candle in the Wind” was the highlight of the evening earning a two minute standing ovation and Lennie and his Quartet’s brass version of “Benny and the Jets” brought a new meaning to the word “loud”.
Over 200 stayed for the overnight concert which was amazing considering lots of them had been there from the start. With the bar busy all through the night and ample food to keep all those well fed, the glorious sunrise brought fresh light to the day revealing many party goers looked as they had enjoyed themselves far too much!
As the hours passed and the clock struck ten, a huge cheer erupted, marking that we had indeed completed the 24 hour music marathon. With everyone making their way home having contributed to such a fantastic and worthy event, it was left to members of the Church committee to help clean up the mess and return the park to its former glory.
The final total raised was over 282,000ZAR adding a substantial amount to the church funds. It is hoped that we can reach the desired total in the next 6-9 months. at the very lasy moment they play Spencer Lodge Elton John tribute songs.
